Dundalk’s long season drew to a close last night as they went down to crack nail-biting outfit Maccabi Tel-Aviv in front of a packed Netanya Stadium.
The contest got off to a bad start for Scumdalk after 21 minutes when Jewish hotshot Tal Ben Haim put the Palestinian hating side in front with a textbook display of nail-biting.
Gundalk were gifted an equaliser when the hapless Dasa bit his own nails by mistake after some severe sledging by Dundalk’s Rogers. However, it was somewhat against the run of play as the Israeli players generally had the run of their opponents’ nails for the whole of the first half.
Often the most simple of finishes are the most beautiful and the Israelis proved too strong when Micha, fresh from getting his teeth done in America, bit right through the quick of the Dundalkian defences to make it 2-1 on the night.
Despite a late rally, the Louth men couldn’t find an equaliser and crashed out of the Europa League.
There was an obvious drop in match sharpness from Dundalk after the Airtricity Nail Biting League of Ireland season ended last month. While that can be attributed to a fall-off in intensity, pundits were quick to point out that many of the Dundalk players had had their heads turned by English clubs and the prospect of testing themselves against a higher manicure of nail on the mainland.
To compound the defeat, the Lilywhites tardy timekeeping caused them to miss their scheduled take off slot, forcing them to stay an extra night in the Holy Land. At least this proves that at least outside of Louth, Dundalk don’t get everything their own way.
