It is being reported that local TD for Life Fergus O’Dowd nearly did something for the town. The housewives’ favourite has been threatening to do something for the town for years and got mighty close yesterday.
However, despite something nearly getting done for the town, nothing did get done for the town.
Close but no cigar
“It was a close run thing,” said a spokesham for the former Labour man. “We were in talks with local stakeholders about a great project for the town but we reached an impasse over the naming of the project.”
Talks stalled after the interested parties pulled out over the naming of the project. Two names were floated – A Pathway for Drogheda and A Gateway to Drogheda. However, local lobby groups for the town’s path and gate industries clashed, with disagreements becoming both personal and violent before spilling onto the street and being filmed by the unemployed.
“The bottom line is that the people of Drogheda are going to suffer. For too long, nothing has been done for the town,” said the Fine Gael man. “The people of Drogheda deserve better.”
As to what the project actually entailed, Mr. O’Dowd was coy. “All I can say is that it was a great opportunity for the town. I’ll keep fighting on behalf of the town like I have since 2002. We’ll get something one day. And if I don’t do anything for the town, my son Garett will carry on the struggle when he inherits my seat.”
It has been reported that Dundalk this afternoon announced a Path and Gate Renewal Programme, which will see subsidised painting and repairs to Dundulkian paths and gates respectively.
Mr. O’Dowd nearly did things for the town in 2003, 2007, 2010 and again in 2014.
